Day 20 – Starting out at the Smithsonians

Went to a couple of the Smithsonian museums today.

Even though all Smithsonian museums are free, it is worth getting a membership for only $12. This saves you 10% on food and the gift shops, which are very good quality.

Started out at the National Museum of Natural History, which includes an exhibition on dinosaurs and early mammals, Egyptian artefacts, human origins and minerals. The museum also has the cursed Hope Diamond. All exhibits are very well presented and enjoyable.

We then went to the National Museum of the American Indian . This museum is extremely well presented. The welcoming video invites you to be challenged by and critically examine the exhibits. They have different themed areas relating to mythology, history and present day. Each area is then broken down into different sections developed by community curators from different nations. This is an excellent and collaborative way to develop a museum and provides educational and insightful information on a wide range of topics. The museum also has a native food cafe which has a wide selection of food from across the Americas.
